Dardanus pedunculatus Herbst 1804
anemone hermit crab

family Diogenidae

The Anemone Hermit Crab, Dardanus pedunculatus, like other hermit crabs, lives in a borrowed shell. In addition it forms a symbiotic relationship with the anemone Calliactis polypus which also lives on the shell. As the crab grows it leaves its shell and moves into a bigger one. It may transfer its old anemone to the new shell or find a bigger anemone.
